Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad, the former prime minister has dispelled claims by Malay rights wing group Perkasa that the design and architecture of Putrajaya was based on Saudi Arabia’s Medina.
Instead, it was based on the iconic Avenue de Champs-Elysees in Paris. Dr Mahathir said that this does not mean everything was copied although the Avenue de Champs-Elysees was the main inspiration. He said this in light of the claims made by Perkasa youth that Medina was the main inspiration for the administrative capital which was the brainchild of the former premier. He said this in referring to the ongoing debate about the possibility of a Hard Rock Café in Putrajaya which he said would not be appropriate.
