Dyana Sofya is one of the ‘rising female’ leaders in the Malaysian political scene since she was named to contest at the Teluk Intan by-election in 2014.
Representing DAP, the UiTM graduate is actually a certified and practicing lawyer where since being named by the party to contest, become very popular as it was not very common for DAP to be fielding a Malay candidate.
Dyana is the political secretary of Lim Kit Siang, one of the top leaders of the party where she joined DAP in 2012. Then, she was involved in the campaigning for the 2013 General Election for Kit Siang who was set to contest in the Gelang Patah’s parliamentary seat.
Dyana hails from Ipoh where she now helps to take care of proceedings in Gelang Patah which was won by Kit Siang in GE13 after much criticism. She has her own law firm which operates in Cyberjaya where through her efforts and ideology has come under fire from her critics.
After all, being an opposition politician will surely warrant these elements especially when she is a Malay lady in a party often ‘painted’ as a Chinese-based organization.
The fact that Dyana represented DAP (although she did not win) showed that she holds true to her beliefs that the party represents a multinational organization instead of that which is claimed by her rivals while she continues to serve the people through her capacity and role.
The defeat in Teluk Intan will only serve as a platform for bigger things where more attention will surely be on her in the coming elections.
