He said the opposition was using the strategy to attack the Umno president as it could undermine the confidence of party members on their president and weaken the president for the opposition to topple him.

“As such, they (opposition parties) are attacking only one person, the Umno president because to weaken the party is to weaken the president. This is what they are trying to create,” he said when opening Papar Umno division meeting, here today.

Also present at the meeting were Papar Umno division head Datuk Abdul Rahim Ismail and his deputy, Datuk Gulam Haidar Khan Bahadar and Papar MP cum Umno supreme council member, Datuk Rosnah Abdul Rashid Shirlin.

According to Ismail Sabri, in the past five to six months even though the attacks on Najib were defamatory, some Umno members were influenced and they forgot who was the enemy and were willing to attack their own president.

The actions of a handful of Umno members, he said had facilitated the task of opposition parties as they no longer need to carry out the attacks themselves to weaken the administration of Najib.

He said the matter would not have arisen if Umno members defended the president as though he had already been convicted by the opposition even without any evidence.

Ismail Sabri said Umno members should return to the party fold to give confidence to Najib to lead the country and party as the president believed Umno and Barisan Nasional must continue to stay in power to ensure the fate of the Malays and Bumiputeras continued to be protected.

Meanwhile Ismail Sabri, who is Rural and Regional Development Minister, said he would continue to give focus on Sabah and Sarawak to ensure the rural residents in both states continued to enjoy development. — Bernama
