SERDANG, Aug 31 — The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) should be placed under the Home Ministry so it can take “stern action” on those who spread lies and tarnish the country’s image online, Selangor Umno chief Datuk Seri Noh Omar said today.
The former minister alluded that the Communications and Multimedia Ministry – which currently oversees the MCMC’s operations – has not been effective enough in clamping down on the spread of false information on social media.
“We need experienced officers to take actions. We don’t question MCMC’s ability, but we realise that the laws should be amended,” he said in his speech at the Puchong Umno division meeting here.
“But no matter how much the law is amended, if no stern action is taken, it is useless.
“But if MCMC is under the Home Ministry, then stern action can be taken against cyber troopers who are responsible in spreading lies which tarnish the country’s image,” Noh added.
