Yang Berbahagia Tan Sri Chan Kong Choy is the former Minister of Transport who took over the post from Tun Dr Ling Liong Sik. He was then succeeded by Datuk Seri Ong Tee Keat who sensationally lost his post and popularity to Datuk Seri Dr Chua Soi Lek.
Kong Choy is the former Member of Parliament of the Selayang constituency where the post was taken over by the opposition after he stepped down before the 2008 General Elections.
Born in Bentong, Kong Choy is a former lecturer before taking an active role in politics. He was the former vice-president of MCA and was once deputy minister of Finance. He won the 2004 election with more than 20,000 majority votes. Apart from the post in Ministry of Finance, he was deputy minister of Culture, Arts and Tourism, Energy, Communication and Multimedia before being appointed full minister of transport in July 2003.
Kong Choy’s most prominent issue was his alleged involvement in the Port Klang Free Zone fiasco in which he has been acquitted for trying to cheat the then Prime Minister Tun Abdullah Ahmad Badawi. He is the second leader after Tun Dr Ling Liong Sik to be involved and charged and acquitted in the PKFZ scandal, which means that the PKFZ could well be another ‘unresolved’ issue involving misusing of government funds.
